Baseball Closes Weekend with Sweep, Splits Four-Game Series vs STAC

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – After dropping the first two games of the series on Saturday, the New Haven baseball team rebounded to sweep the Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans on Sunday, mustering a split of the four-game weekend series. With the weekend results, New Haven stands at 8-9 on the season heading into its Northeast-10 opener on Wednesday at crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University.

All combined for the weekend, sophomore center fielder Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) led New Haven at the plate, scattering four hits across the four games as he went 4-10 overall with three RBI and three runs scored. In the two wins on Sunday, Ungania finished 3-of-7 at the plate with all three RBI and three runs coming in the two wins.

Joining Ungania in leading the way on Sunday was sophomore left fielder Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) who was a combined 2-for-6 at the plate with two RBI. Graduate outfielder and designated hitter Tyler Well also knocked in a pair of runs on Sunday, with both of those coming in the opening game.

On the mound, the Chargers two Sunday starters earned the victory with sophomore Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) getting that distinction in game one and transfer senior Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Wilmington) earning the win in game two. Ramnarace threw five complete innings in the opening game, surrendering a pair of earned runs on two hits while striking out six batters. Lewis also went five innings for his second win of the season, giving up a single earned run on two hits and striking out a pair. Starters Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and Michael Gatti (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) suffered the losses on Saturday.

New Haven's NE10 opener on Wednesday night will come on the road in the first of three single games on the schedule against the crosstown rival, all three of which will count towards the NE10 Southwest Division record. First pitch in the series opener on Wednesday is set for 3:00 p.m.

GAME 1: STAC 4, New Haven 1

In the opening game of the series, STAC opened up the scoring in the top of the first before adding three more runs in the fifth inning. In both instances it was left fielder Sean Lynch with the big bat as he double in the first inning run and then cleared the bases with a double in the fifth.

New Haven looked chip away at the lead in the fifth inning when Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) led off the frame with a home run to right center, his team-leading third of the season. STAC's starter Andrew Alameda, who went the distance for the win, didn't let that solo homer trip him up as he retired the next three batters in order to end any rally the Chargers looked to start.

GAME 2: STAC 4, New Haven 2

For the second time in as many games, STAC opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning, plating a pair of runs as right fielder Joseph Scamardella went yard with a two-run shot to left. It would take two innings, but the Chargers answered back in the second when they cut that early STAC lead in half with a single run thanks to Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) who drove in the catcher Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic).

STAC would add two more runs to extend its lead to a familiar 4-1 margin with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Chargers would look to rally in their last chances at the plate but would only manage to cut that deficit in half with a single run in the seventh. Again it was Calahan coming through as he reached safely on a fielder's choice that allowed Ungania to score from second, thanks in part to a throwing error against the Spartans.

GAME 3: New Haven 7, STAC 2

For the third straight game, STAC began the scoring early as they plated two runs in the top of the first to take the early lead before New Haven responded by scoring seven unanswered. Facing that 2-0 deficit, the Chargers began to answer back right away as they cut that lead in half in the bottom of the first as Wells picked up his first RBI of the game driving in Ungania.

An error in the third on a hard hit ball from Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) would knot the game at two as he again drove in Ungania. However, It was the fifth inning that put the game out of reach for the Spartans as the Chargers scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Extra base hits from Wells and Pincince drove in the first two runs while Callahan added another RBI to score Pincince. Ungania then got in on the RBI action in the sixth when he single to right to drive in a pair of runs with Frazzetta scoring form third and Franquiz from second.

GAME 4: New Haven 6, STAC 1

For the first time in the four-game series it was New Haven that scored first as the Chargers would plate their first run of the day in the first and add five more runs in the third to took a 6-0 lead.

Pincince would drive in the first two runs for New Haven with an RBI single in the first inning and another RBI single top begin the third inning rally. The next two runs for New Haven came courtesy of STAC miscues, the first a wild pitch and the second on a fielding error in left. Ungania would then drive in the final run of the inning when Cerruto scored on a fielder's choice.

STAC was unable to put a rally together down the stretch, only managing to score a single run in the fifth inning, once again with Scamardella picking up the RBI on a single through the left side.
