Hernandez Hat Trick Leads Chargers in Top 20 Battle vs No. 1 Pace

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – It was a top-20 battle under the lights on a rainy Wednesday night at Kathy Zolad Stadium with the No. 1 Pace Setters securing a 17-6 win over the No. 20 New Haven women's lacrosse team. With the loss, New Haven falls to 4-3 on the season with a 2-1 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference.

There were a combined 58 shots between the two top-20 opponents with 43 of those marked on goal as two of the top goalies in the NE10 combined for 20 total saves on the night, 11 from the Setters Samantha Tanguay and nine for the Chargers Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford).

For the Chargers, three different players combined for the six goals with senior Ivanna Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y./Brentwood) leading the way with a hat trick three goals on the night. Following her in the scoring column was graduate attacker Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy) with two and junior Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) rounding out the scoring with one goal.

Sophomores Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) and Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) each finished the day with a pair of assists while two of the six goals went in the books as unassisted scores. In addition to her one goal, Caprioli also added a pair of caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls, while Castiglione led the team with three draw controls and added a caused turnover. As a team, New Haven finished the night with 10 turnovers, with two other players also adding a pair, Kailey Ego (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) and Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug).

After enjoying a weekend bye, New Haven will return to action a week from today when they travel across town to renew the annual battle of the Elm City with a date against the Southern Connecticut State University Owls on Wednesday, April 3. Opening draw in the NE10 battle is set for 4:00 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
