BOCA RATON, Fla. – Pitching remains the strength of the New Haven baseball team on its southern trip as junior Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) threw a complete game shutout to lead the Chargers to a second-straight win, 1-0 over the Wilmington Wildcats. With the win, New Haven improves to 4-6 on the season.
Runs were certainly at a premium on Saturday afternoon with the lone tally in the game coming in the bottom of the first inning with neither team able to plate a run over the final eight innings.
On the hill, Carroll surrendered just three hits on the day, one of which was a triple with that runner ending the inning stranded at third. In addition, the southpaw struck out 12 batters, including two innings with to or more and striking out the side in the second.
At the plate, the Chargers scattered six hits across five different players with sophomore Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) leading the way with two hits, on three at bats. Outfielder Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) opened up the hitting for New Haven with a leadoff triple to left center in the bottom of the first inning. He wouldn't be on base long as he scored on the next at bat with first baseman Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) driving him in on a single to left. Those two hits were part of four-straight for New Haven to lead off the game, while the remaining two came in the sixth and seventh frames.
New Haven will enjoy an off day on Sunday before returning to the field at Lynn University on Monday for another regional matchup as they take on Molloy. First pitch against the Lions is set for 11:00 a.m.
