Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup with Queens

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of Chargers racked up three hits at the dish to lead the New Haven Baseball team in an 8-4 loss to the visiting Queens Knights on Wednesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. With the loss, the Chargers fall to an even 15-15 on the season.

First baseman Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) and designated hitter Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) each finished with a trio of hits to lead the Chargers at the plate. McIntire added a walk and an RBI to his credit, while McIntire scored three runs on the afternoon. Joining that duo with multiple hits against the Knights was shortstop Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) who finished 2-for-4 with a team-high two RBI.

Three additional players registered one hit each, all three outfielders Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade), Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) and Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven). All combined that trio, combined with McIntire and Maucere, had the first five in the lineup accounting for nine of the 11 total hits on the day.

On the bump it was a bullpen day for the Blue and Gold with senior transfer Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Wilmington) earning the start and suffering the loss on the day. In two innings of work, Lewis was tagged with six runs, three of them earned, on five hits and a pair of walks with two strikeouts.

The final six pitchers to see time on the hill all finished without allowing a run, as the Chargers bullpen held Queens scoreless for six innings. Jake Zenger (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) threw the longest outing out of the pen, pitching two full innings without allowing a hit. Christian De Risi (Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) also did not allow a hit in one full inning of work with a pair of strikeouts to his credit. Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) combined to pitch the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.

New Haven will return to the diamond for four games this coming weekend, traveling north to New Hampshire and Vermont. First up on the two-day trip will be a stop in Rindge, N.H. to take on the Franklin Pierce Ravens on Saturday before heading to Colchester, Vt. to take on Saint Michael's on Sunday. First pitch on both days is set for 12:00 p.m.
