Chargers Prevail in High Scoring Affair, 19-16 over No. 21 Assumption

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Trailing early, the New Haven offense jump started and outscored Assumption 6-2 to close out the first quarter, flip the score in its favor and never looked back as they went on to defeat the No. 21 Greyhounds 19-16. With the win, New Haven improves to 6-4 on the season and 4-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Seven different Chargers accounted for the 19 New Haven goals with four different players all racking up a hat trick or more to lead the way. Transfer Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) led the way in the scoring column for the second-straight game, rattling the back of the cage seven times. She has now scored 13 goals in the last two games combined. In addition, she added one assist for seven points.

Joining her in the hat trick column was graduate attack Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy) and midfielders Ivanna Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y./Brentwood) and Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) who each finished with three goals. Hernandez added an assist to finish with four points, second most to Schenk. Joining her with four points on the night was Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) who split her four points evenly with two goals and two assists.

Rounding out the scoring for the Blue and Gold was Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and Kyra Sparks (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) who each scored once. Overall, New Haven outshot the Greyhounds 36-32, including a 27-21 advantage in shots on goal.

Between the pipes for the Chargers was the senior netminder Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) who played the full 60 minutes and finished the night with five saves, while her counterpart, Skylar Troyan, made eight saves.

As a team, New Haven also excelled on the draw where they finished with a commanding 26-13 advantage, led by Schenk who secured 10 of the 26. Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier) and Castiglione followed her with nine and six, respectively. Schenk also finished with a pair of caused turnovers and three ground balls.

The Chargers will close out a three-game homestand on the weekend when they welcome the Molloy Lions to Kathy Zolad Stadium on Saturday, April 13. Opening draw in the non-conference battle is set for 1:00 p.m.
