WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven women's lacrosse team trailed by as much as three goals in the third quarter but never waivered as they answered that deficit by scoring five straight en route to an 11-9 win over the visiting Molloy Lions on Saturday afternoon at Kathy Zolad Stadium. With the win, New Haven improves to 7-4 on the season.
Leading the Chargers on the afternoon was graduate attack who scored a hat trick, matching a pair of Molloy Lions in leading al players in the game in the scoring column. Her three points also led the team, while senior midfielder Ivanna Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y./Brentwood) also finished with three points, hers coming on two goals and an assist. Both of Hernandez's goals came on three free position attempts, while Caprioli and Castiglione also added free position goals.
One other Charger finished with multiple goals on the day, junior Giana Caprioli, while Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), Katie Schenck, Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) and Kyra Sparks (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) all finished with a single vote. The assist from Hernandez was one of two total on the day, with Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) adding the only other.
Senior goalkeeper Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) played the full 60 minutes between the pipes, racking up 11 saves, her sixth game of the season with double figure stops and pushing her over the century mark for the season, now with 102 total on the year.
For the second straight game, the Chargers capitalized on the draw, earning 19 of the 23 total restarts, including leaving the Lions without a single draw control in the second and third periods. Leading the way was Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier) who finished with seven draws, while Schenk added seven as the pair led the way.
With the Saturday afternoon game against Molloy the last in a stretch of three-straight at home, New Haven will play its next two games on the road, the first coming on Tuesday, April 16 when it travels to Albany, N.Y. to take on the Saint Rose Golden Knights. Opening draw in the NE10 battle is slated for 4:00 p.m.
