COLCHESTER, Vt. – Closing out its weekend in Northern New England, the New Haven baseball team dropped both ends of a Sunday doubleheader (Game 1: Saint Michael's 10, New Haven 9 | Game 2: Saint Michael's 8, New Haven 2) at the hands of the Saint Michael's Purple Knights.
Overall for the day, New Haven scattered 19 hits across the doubleheader with freshman third baseman Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) leading all Chargers at the plate with four hits. He closed out the day 4-of-8 at the plate and drove in one run which came in the opening game.
Catcher Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) had a quality outing in the opener as he finished 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI and drove in two runs. First baseman Matthew McIntire and graduate DH Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) each finished the day with three hits combined, as both finished with a pair of hits in the opener and added one more in game two. In the night cap, outfielder Sean Callahan had a good outing, finishing 2-for-3 overall.
On the mound, reliever Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Wilmington) suffered the loss in the opening game, pitching 4.2 innings out of the pen and surrendering five runs, two of which were earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts. Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) started the first game of the day, giving up five earned runs on seven hits in just two innings of work. Christian De Risi (Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) closed game one for the Chargers, finishing four outs of work without allowing a hit.
In the night cap, starter Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) suffered the loss, pitching four full innings with seven runs allowed, four of which were earned, on 10 hits and struck out four. Both Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) and Robert Synodi (Hebron, C.T./RHAM) saw an inning of action out of the pen, with Allen the better of the two as he didn't surrender a run, facing one batter over the minimum.
New Haven will return to action with a single mid-week game on Wednesday afternoon when they head across campus to face crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University in the rubber-game of the three-game series against the Owls. First pitch to determine the series winner is set for 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
