McKinley's Six Inning Shutout Leads Chargers in Split with Penmen

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The homestead continued for the University of New Haven Softball team, as they welcomed the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University in a Sunday double header, and the middle series of the Chargers homestand.

Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) got the start in game one and came out dealing working her way through the lineup in her first three innings of work however it was the Penmen who pushed the first runs across in the fourth inning off a two run homerun that gave the Penmen the lead over the Chargers and Kinney. New Haven threatened throughout the game getting runners on off of walks to put pressure on SNHU but the blue and gold never got the big hit they were looking for. In the sixth, the Penmen added three runs to take the first game of the afternoon as the blue and gold looked to split the series against the Penmen looking to Viana McKinley (North Chesterfield, Va./Monacan) to settle the bats of the Penmen in the second game. After getting the first two batters of the inning out, McKinley gave up a hit but responded with getting the fourth batter of the inning out. McKinley responded as well by sitting down the next eight Penmen she faced in order going eight up, eight down cruising through the lineup and being efficient with her pitches. In the home half of the first inning the Chargers struck quick with a leadoff double by Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) and quickly took the lead as Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) singled to score Chenet and give New Haven the lead and their first lead of the afternoon, 1-0. McKinley needed only one run, but the bats of the Chargers added some insurance for their starting pitcher, adding in the fifth inning. Lucia Ceccarelli (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) got the inning started with a one out single, before she advanced to third on Kylie Thorpe's (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) single to right center setting up runners at the corners with one out. Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area) came up with the big hit singling to right scoring Cecarelli, as Thorpe advanced to third on the play and on the throw Trueman would advance to second on the play. Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) with one run already in, dropped down a bunt as the Chargers manufactured a run scoring Thorpe, as New Haven extended their lead. Olivia Roberto (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) drove in the Chargers third run of the inning on a single to left field as the blue and gold led 4-0. McKinley threw a shut out sixth inning and turned it over to Sylar Griffin who threw a shutout inning in the seventh as New Haven came back and won 4-0 in game two, splitting the series with the Penmen behind the six innings of shutout work by McKinley.

The homestand continues for New Haven as they wrap up the homestand with a non-conference double header against the Eagles of Post University for a midweek matchup at Charger Softball Field. First pitch between the Chargers and Eagles is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and all updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
