WEST HAVEN, Conn. – In the final series of the home stand, the University of New Haven Softball team welcomed the Eagles of Post University for a midweek double-header as the blue and gold began their final push in the season and the final home stand series of the three series home stand.
With rain on the forecast and coming off a win against Southern New Hampshire where the bats got started early, New Haven copied their approach from the weekend and jumped out early on the Eagles. After a quiet first inning, the second inning saw the Chargers storm out the gate sending a message. Halle Frederick (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) singled with one out before Ashley Veisz (Robbinsville,N.J./Robbinsville) walked to set up two on with no outs for Stephanie Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) and the top of the order up in the on deck circle. Smith saw a first pitch strike before putting the ball in play on the infield forcing the shortstop who was playing at double play depth to have to charge but had to hold the throw as Smith made it up the line fast loading the bases and bringing up Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy).
Three Chargers entered the game having drove in double-digit runs this season, Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area) (12), Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) (11), and Halle Frederick (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) (10), as Chenet entered the box looking to become the fourth as she sat with eight RBI's to that point. After seeing a first strike called she fouled the second pitch off. Chenet turned on the third pitch of the at bat finding the gap in right-center field, turning on the jets out of the box. Head coach Kelly Patterson at third gave everyone the green-light, as Frederick scored with ease ahead of Veisz from second. Smith from first kept her head down and had the green light turning third ahead of Chenet who was right behind her standing at third with a bases clearing triple putting New Haven on the board first with a big three run inning.
In the circle, Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) pitched around trouble that she found herself in and got some help from her defense making plays to secure outs and keep the Eagles grounded. Post scored their lone run in the third inning but that was all that Kinney would allow as she slammed the door with her second strikeout of the inning, leaving the bases loaded.
The bats got back to work in the fourth inning, as the bottom of the lineup got the inning started as Ashley Veisz (Robbinsville,N.J./Robbinsville) singled down the left field line. As the inning progressed, Chenet would single and Roberto would walk after Smith's fielders choice to load the bases with two outs for Lauren Haversat (Seymour, Conn./Seymoour). Haversat got the run back that Post scored in the third and added a run with a two run single up the middle but the Chargers looked for more as Anderson singled to add an RBI and Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) cleared the bases with a double making it a 9-1 game going into the fifth.
Kinney having thrown four innings of one run, four hit softball, striking out five Eagles, turned it over to Marzia Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) looking to throw an inning of scoreless softball to give New Haven the win from runs. Johnson came on and walked the leadoff batter but her defense got the first out at second on a fielder's choice before Anderson made first base the hot corner catching a liner and tagging first for the unassisted double play to end things, with New Haven winning 9-1 in five innings.
The Chargers started right were they left off from game one, in game two, as Chenet roped her second triple of the afternoon to open up the game and the blue and gold wasted no time bringing her in as Lucia Ceccarelli (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) singled to right field scoring Chenet as New Haven once again struck first.
The Chargers doubled their lead in the second inning, when Trueman singled to right field, but the ball got under the glove of the fielder and Trueman turned on the jets, cruising into third on the play to set up back to back innings with the leadoff batter on third to start the inning. Corina Wilton (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) pulled a pitch in her at bat and once the pitcher that came out of the circle to field turned to throw to first, Trueman took off for home scoring on the play, making it 2-0.
Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) made her fourth start of the season looked like she was at home in the circle working out of any pressure from the bats of the Eagles and keeping her team out in front.New Haven added a third run in the fifth inning off a solo homerun by Chenet as she had a pair of triples and a homerun on the day, but Griffin only needed one run throwing a complete game shutout allowing only five hits picking up a strikeout on her way to her first win of the season as the blue and gold won 3-0.
New Haven with the sweep of Post split their home stand and look to carry their momentum on the road for their next game before they return home to Charger Softball Field.
