GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Leading by just a single run heading into the sixth, the New Haven baseball team plated four runs in the top of the sixth and never looked back as they went on to defeat Adelphi 7-2 and secure the series victory against the fellow Southwest Division opponent. The Chargers and Panthers will close out the series on Sunday with a single game set for a 1:00 p.m. start. With the win, New Havem improves to 21-20 on the year and 13-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
On the mound it was a pair of starters that combined for the victory with sophomores Michael Gatti (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) and Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) combining to throw the full nine innings. Gatti earned the win, his fourth of the season, as he started and pitched five innings, surrendering both of the Panthers runs on two hits and two walks. He also struck out six. Ramnarace followed out of the pen, throwing four scoreless innings, surrendering two hits without a walk and also struck out six to make it an even dozen for the Charger staff.
At the dish, New Haven finished with a 12-4 advantage in the hit column as all but two batters in the Chargers lineup hit safely at least once. Two Chargers finished the afternoon going 3-of-5 at the plate with right fielder Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) leading the duo knocking three runs on his three hits, one of which was a double. The other to secure a trio of hits was designated hitter Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) who would come around to score on one occasion and also finished with one double among his three this.
First baseman Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) also had a double on the day, finishing 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, as his double wrapped up the Chargers extra base hits on the day. The only other Charger to finish with a multi-hit outing was rookie third baseman Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) who finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell), Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) wrapped up the Chargers hitting, with Budzik also knocking two runs for his squad.
