WORCESTER, Mass. – After a statement win in game two against the Falcons of Bentley University on Friday afternoon, the University of New Haven Softball team returned to Massachusetts and to the diamond to take on the Greyhounds of Assumption University looking to carry the success for their win against Bentley over and keep the bats hot.
Viana McKinley (North Chesterfield, Va./Monacan) got the start in the circle for the Chargers after she picked up her third collegiate win of her career. McKinley cruised through the first two innings against the Greyhounds giving up only one hit during that time, and striking out one in that time. In the third however, the Greyhounds were able to get to McKinley, scoring two in the inning. The Greyhounds would go on and add two in the fourth, a run in the fifth, and a pair in the sixth as the Greyhounds took game one of the afternoon 6-0. Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) got the start in the circle for the blue and gold in game two but the bats erupted to open up the second game. Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) led the game off with a walk and used her speed to steal second base on the very next pitch. Stephanie Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) reached after being hit by a pitch before Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) cashed in putting New Haven on the board first and still having two on with no outs. Lucia Ceccarelli (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) with one out loaded the bases for the Chargers with a single through the right side. Halle Frederick (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) added the power and cleared the bases tripling to left field quickly making it a 4-0 game in favor of the Chargers. With the lead, Kinney went to work and dealed all afternoon commanding the zone and keeping the Greyhounds in check. Assumption would score a run in the second and the third, but that would be as close as Kinney would allow them to get shutting them down and slamming the door. Kinney would go on and finish throwing a complete game striking out two and only allowing two runs, as Frederick had the go-ahead triple in the first inning.
New Haven now turns their attention to the Elm City battle when they take on cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, April 10 with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. All updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
