WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Looking to secure its seeding in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship, the New Haven baseball team went into its final weekend of the regular season looking to sweep the Yellow Jackets and they did just that, taking both ends of the regular season finale doubleheader on Sunday.
In the opening game it came down to a single run as the Chargers would take the 1-0 victory to secure the No. 2 seed in the Southwest Division for the conference championship. With the game-winning hit was center fielder Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) whose double right center allowed Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) to score in the sixth.
Overall, Callahan's RBI double was part of six hits for the Chargers with designated hitter Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) leading the way with two hits in four at bats after being honored prior to the game as one of four seniors who will graduate later this month. Along with wells, Nicholas Campagnuolo (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke), Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) and Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) were also honored.
On the mound, starter Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) earned the victory, pitching six innings of shutout ball with a career-high 10 strikeouts. Sophomore Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) was the lone Charger out of the pen in the opening game, pitching the final three innings for his third save of the season, allowing two runs and striking out six.
With the seeding in the Southwest Division locked up after game one, the Chargers would go on to close out the regular season with a 16-1 win over the Yellow Jackets to finish with a 24-22 overall record and a 16-11 mark in NE10 play. Overall, New Haven used 16 position players and nine pitchers in game two of the day.
Combined at the plate, New Haven finished with 16 hits, including nine from the top three spots in the lineup. Leading the way was centerfielder Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) and designated hitter Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) who each finished with three hits. First baseman Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) and second baseman EJ Ettinger (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) each followed with two hits. In addition the nine hits from the first three spots in the lineup, that combination also accounted for seven RBI, led by Callahan with three, while Ungania and Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) each drove in two.
On the mound it was Christian De Risi (Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), the third out of the pen, who earned the victory as he pitched the fourth inning. All combined the nine pitchers collected eight strikeouts with Jake Zenger (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) leading the way as he struck out the side in the seventh. Five of the eight strikeouts came in the final three innings.
