Mitchell and Wood Combine for 2-0 Shutout of Rival Owls on Senior Day

WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
It was a beautiful day on the pitch at Kathy Zolad Stadium with mostly sunny skies and the University of New Haven women's soccer team wasn't going to let anything spoil the day, scoring a 2-0 shutout of the visiting Southern Connecticut State University Owls. With the win, the Chargers improve to 2-0 on the season and will next host the Caldwell Cougars on Tuesday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. opening kickoff slated.

Despite the Owls holding a commanding 26-8 lead in the shots column the only two that mattered came from the Chargers with Emma Mitchell (Edinburgh, Scotland/Liberton) and Lola Wood (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan School) both finding the back of the net. The win for the Blue and Gold over their crosstown rival is the first since October 2016, as the Owls have won the last five-straight matches with the sixth ending in a scoreless draw.

Mitchell would put the first tally on the score board, converting a corner kick attempt with just 63 seconds remaining in the opening half. Working with junior Ashlee Crumrine (Bristol, Conn./Bristol), Mitchell was able to head in a ball that Crumrine served into a crowded box as Mitchell's shot attempt went opposite of the Owls keeper and gave New Haven the lead.

Despite the goals from Mitchell and Wood it was the stellar work of junior captain and goalkeeper as the Nutmeg State native racked up 10 saves, her first time reaching double digit stops this season. The keeper was tested on numerous occasions, stopping point blank attempts while also relying on the friendly bounce of the upright once and the upper left 90 once.

With the clean sheet still intact late in the contest and Southern looking to push deep into their offensive zone it was the quick wheels of Wood that paid off as Grace Simpson (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) gathered a long clear from her back line and sent it streaming toward the far-left corner of the 18-yard box. From there, Wood collected the pass, dribbled forward and fired a shot to the opposite corner that went out of the reach of the Owl outstretched keeper and tickled the twine to put the game out of reach.
