Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Chargers fall in Battle with Falcons

WALTHAM, MA. – After a night that saw the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team go to a fifth set in each of their matches against AIC and Daeman the blue and gold returned to the Dana Center to take on another familiar foe in the Falcons of Bentley University.

Just as they had done the night before, New Haven jumped out to a hot start as Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) got the first kill for New Haven. Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) capped off a 6-1 run to open up the match with a kill before Bentley got their second point. The blue and gold never trailed in the opening set as down the stretch the Chargers set the tone going on a 5-0 run with Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) and Lauren MacKeller each picking up kills to put the set out of reach before Mast closed it out with a kill, 25-17 to go up 1-0 in the match. The second set saw New Haven trail for the first time but battle back throughout the set and take a late lead with a kill from Amber Williams (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood). Bentley however would close out the set scoring four points to even the match at 1-1. The third set saw another battle like the second as both teams traded points and never let the other get too far out in front. Another late run for Bentley was the difference as they took the third set 25-20 going up 2-1 in the match. In the fourth, New Haven opened up hot as Mast picked up the opening two kills before a service ace by Juergens and Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) had a kill on the run. However, Bentley responded with a run of their own and took the lead which would prove to be the difference as New Haven would fall in the fourth 25-22 and 3-1 in the match. Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) led New Haven with 14 kills as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) posted a double-double with 19 digs and 17 assists.

The Chargers now return home and will open up their home court as they host I-95 rival the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday, September 17 with the first tip scheduled for 7:00 PM from Charger Gymnasium. All updates, schedules, and post-match recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
