MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The University of New Haven field hockey team concluded a weekend of games against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference schools with a 3-2 decision against No. 10 Millersville on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 1-2 on the young season.
The Marauders are the second-straight ranked team that the Chargers faced, while the two goals are the first against those two squads. Millersville entered the 2024 season ranked No. 10 in the preseason poll of head coaches, with the first in-season poll scheduled to come out on September 16.
Millersville held the momentum for much of the match, closing out the afternoon with a 16-4 advantage in the shots column, holding the Blue and Gold without a shot attempt in both the second and third quarters. Among the 16 shots from the Marauders, 12 were marked on goal, with Chargers keeper Rae Kline (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline) registering nine saves as the rookie made her collegiate debut in the cage.
Trailing late in the first quarter, junior forward Erin Smith (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) would net the first goal of the day for the Blue and Gold, knotting the score at one with just 10 seconds remaining before the first intermission. Millersville added one more goal before the end of the first half and extended its lead to 3-1 just prior to the conclusion of the third quarter.
The Chargers looked to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter but was able to muster just a single shot in the flurry of action, with that shot coming off the stick of Emma Beaujouan (Concord, N.H./Concord) and drilling the backboard for her first goal of the season. Credit Eliza Caven (Caledon, Ontario/Humberview Secondary) with the assist as the goal pulled New Haven within one with under 90 seconds remaining.
Despite returning from the Keystone State after this afternoon's match, the Chargers will turn around and head back to Pennsylvania middle of this week for their next game when they are slated to take on Bloomsburg on Wednesday, September 18. The third-straight match against a PSAC school is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at Steph Pettit Stadium.
