WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Erin Smith (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) picked up right where she left off on Saturday night scoring the first goal of a five-goal night for her squad as the Chargers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-1 win over the visiting Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans. With the win, New Haven evens its overall record to 3-3 on the season.
In addition to her early tally on the scoreboard, Smith added two more points on a pair of second quarter assists to lead all scorers. Overall, all five of New Haven's goals came from different players with Johannah Lee (State College, Pa./State College Area), Kat Trammel (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) and Sydney Moda (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) all finding the back of the cage in the run of play, while graduate forward Paige Garrett (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) converted a penalty stoke late in the game
In the cage, sophomore Cara Lambert (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) picked up her third win of the season, securing seven saves while facing a total of 12 shots from the Spartans. New Haven also held a 9-7 lead in penalty corners while leading in the shot column 13-12.
Smith's early goal came on an assist from Garrett who's cross from the middle to the left post found Smith who tapped in the shot to the near corner. That opening goal came just under six minutes into the game. About three minutes after the first quarter break, Lee broke through with her first goal of the season, what would eventually count as the game-winner on an unassisted backhanded shot off the backboard.
Trammel and Moda would each add goals before the halftime break. The first of those came on a forward assist from Smith that Trammell collected and fired from the top of the arc. Also working with Smith, Moda collected a pass in a scramble in front of the cage and drilled her shot into the backboard.
After the Spartans broke up the shutout in the 42nd minute, Garrett regained a four-goal lead in favor of the Chargers when she converted the first penalty stroke of the season for her first goal of the year.
The Chargers get right back to work in less than 48 hours when they cap off a three-game homestand with a visit from No. 3 East Stroudsburg on Wednesday afternoon. The non-conference matchup is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium with all of the action available on NE10 Now on Flo Sports.
