Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s Tennis Completes Weekend Road Sweep

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Coming off of a 4-3 win over Adelphi University in a mid-week matchup, the New Haven women's tennis team looked to maintain their unblemished record with a pair of road matches, earning a 6-1 victory over Saint Anselm and a 7-0 sweep of Saint Michael's. With the two weekend decisions, New Haven improves to 5-0 on the season, including a 4-0 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play.

The first match of the weekend took the Chargers to Manchester, N.H. for a date with the Hawks. New Haven opened up the day with an impressive doubles showing, surrendering just three games total across the three doubles matchups. The No. 3 pairing of Leni Bischof (Aigen, Austria/BRG Stainach) and Laura Ortner (Schlierbach, Austria/BRG Kirchdorf) would post the lone sweep in doubles action with a 6-0 decision, while the No. 1 partnership of Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) took a 6-1 win and secured the doubles point in favor of the Chargers.

In singles play, for the second match in a row it was sophomore Agustina Ravera (Miramar, Fla./Broward Virtual School) who secured the match victory for her team, this time around coming with a sweep of the Hawks Abigail Svor at No. 4 singles as she closed out the victory without surrendering a game.

Setting up her match-securing victory were singles wins at No. 4 for Laura Ortner (Schlierbach, Austria/BRG Kirchdorf), No. 2 for Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) and No. 3 for Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko), with Carreras closing out her win with a 6-0 shutout in the second set after taking a 6-3 win in the opening set.

Just 24 hours after earning the win over the Hawks, the Chargers traveled to Colchester, Vt. where they completed the weekend with a 7-0 sweep of the Purple Knights. In doubles action it was once again the grouping of the No. 3 and No. 1 pairs that combined to secure the first point of the day. At No. 1 singles Ferrarini and Carerras combined to maintain their undefeated season doubles record, while a new pairing of Sneh Dagar (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and Elaina Morosky (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) was the deciding duo with their 6-2 win in the No. 3 matchup.

In singles play, Bischof opened up the action with a sweep at No. 4, one of two Chargers to sweep their singles action without allowing a game to their opponent as she was joined by Dagar at No. 6 to each finish with 6-0, 6-0 wins.

With the victories by Bischof, Laura Ortner (Schlierbach, Austria/BRG Kirchdorf) at No. 3 and Ferrarini at No. 1 secured, Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko) would put the match away for the Chargers as she earned her first singles win of the season in the No. 2 position with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Annabelle Aldrete.

The Chargers will return to action with four matches scheduled for the week ahead, the first three of which will come at the New Haven Tennis Courts. First up on the docket is a Tuesday afternoon clash between New Haven and Assumption with the action against the Greyhounds to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
