Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Three Chargers Score in Shutout of Crosstown Rival Owls

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Add another tally in the win column against the crosstown rival as the New Haven men's soccer team traveled just minutes from its home campus to score a hat trick and defeat Southern Connecticut 3-0. With the decision, the Chargers improve to 4-2-1 overall and pick up their first Northeast-10 Conference win, now 1-1 on the year.

New Haven held much of the momentum in the early going and it paid off on a quick run in the seventh minute that ended with a goal from graduate midfielder Albert Portas (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Sust). The Barcelona, Spain native froze the Owls keeper in place as he drilled a shot from 25 yards out that found the top right corner for what would be the eventual game-winning goal.

The teams would play even the remainder of the half, however New Haven held a 9-1 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes, forcing the Owls keeper to make four saves. Overall for the game, the Chargers led the shot battle 16-10 with Archie Watts (Bristol, England/SGS College) being challenged just once in those 10 shot attempts, collecting the lone save he needed to protect the clean sheet.

Coming out of the halftime intermission, New Haven struck two more times, both within the first 11 minutes of action. In the 52nd minute Sandro Branquinho (Covilha, Portugal/Wright State) would play a brilliant cross to the opposite side of the 18-yard box where Mattia Maiello (Novara, Italy/Liceo Carlo Alberto) used a header to push it to the opposite side of the net eluding the outstretched hands of the Owls keeper.

Less than four minutes later rookie Luke Fiscella (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) net the first goal of his collegiate career. The New Fairfield, Conn. native collected a pass two yards outside of the 18-yard box and dribbled into the box where he snuck a shot past his defender and into the right corner of the net past the diving attempt from Southern Connecticut's goalkeeper.

New Haven will continue a series of six-straight NE10 games when they head to Rindge, N.H. to take on the reigning conference and national champion Franklin Pierce Ravens, currently the No. 2 team according to the United Soccer Coaches national poll. Opening kickoff in the conference battle is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 29.
