Chargers Fall in Opener to Jefferson

LAKEWOOD, New Jersey. – Coming off a year where the University of New Haven Women's Soccer team honored twelve seniors, the reigns were turned over to a core of the team that would name Alida Bates (Danville, N.H./Timberlane Regional), Caitlin Daley (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy), Vickie Fleming (Burlington, Conn./Lewis Mills), and Caroline Ennis (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) as captains,  to lead a group of incoming freshmen, new faces via transfers, and the returners to turn things around in the new season.

The Chargers opened up their 2024 campaign with a non-conference match up against the Rams of Jefferson University at the Georgian Court University Lions Opening Tournament. The blue and golds defense was put to the test early as the Rams came out strong and pressured the back line for the Chargers. Daley and the back line faced nine shots from the Rams in the first half, three being on target that were all easily collected by Daley to keep things level at the half. Freshman Grace Simpson (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) making her debut in the blue and gold got two early looks and led the Chargers attack with two out of the three shots in the first half. The Rams out of the half again pressured New Haven and were able to draw three fouls by the Chargers and converted after the fouls scoring a trio of goals. In total Daley faced eight shots in the second half, saving three to bring her save total to six saves for the game. The attack found a pair of angles but were turned away in the second half as the Chargers would fall in the 2024 opener, 3-0 to the Rams.
