LAKEWOOD, New Jersey. – In their second match of the tournament, the University of New Haven Women's Soccer team returned to the pitch to take on the Lions from Georgian Court University as the blue and gold looked to bounce back after the loss to Jefferson in their first match.
The Lions with the opening possession pressured the New Haven back line that stepped up to the pressure and turned away the Lions. Grace Simpson (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) led the counterattack on the other end and had a shot that was blocked but gave New Haven their first early look. The defense continued to weather the Lion's storm that came in response to New Haven's counter as keeper Caitlin Daley (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) was put to the test having to make a save on a low-lining shot. With fresh legs coming on for both squads in the first half neither found break through and headed to the half scoreless as Daley came up with a pair of saves and an offense that rattled off a trio of shots on net. With possession, the Chargers came out and quickly pressured Georgian Court rattling off a pair of shots, first by Layla Coppola (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) and then by Emily Marco (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) to force saves by the Lion's keeper who turned away New Haven. The pressure remained there but neither team was able to break through for nearly a half hour into the second half. It was however the Lions in the 73 minute off a corner who beat Daley to her left and went up by a goal. Then again in the 80 minute, the Lions found some room, and a shot high and to the left was just out of the reach of Daley making it 2-0. New Haven as a team had ten shots with two on goal along with four corners but were not able to find the breakthrough they needed. Caitlin Daley (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) faced 14 shots, six shots on goal making four saves in the loss as the Lions keeper finished a pair of saves.
The Chargers return to New Jersey on Wednesday, September 11th for their third straight non-conference match when they take on the Golden Falcons of Felician University.
