Viera, Fla.- Chargers drop game one on their spring break trip down in the sunshine state. The University of New Haven Chargers softball team suffered a 7-1 defeat against Mercy University. Dropping their overall record to 0-3.
Â
New Haven's offense struggled to find its rhythm, managing only three hits against Mercy's pitching. The Chargers' lone run came in the seventh inning when
Olivia Roberto (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) tripled to left field, driving in
Marzia Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford). Roberto's triple was a bright spot in an otherwise challenging day at the plate for New Haven.
Â
Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) took the loss for the Chargers, falling to 0-2 on the season. She pitched three innings, allowing two runs on two hits. The New Haven bullpen couldn't contain Mercy's offense, surrendering five more runs over the final three innings.
Â
Despite the loss, there were some positives for New Haven. The defense played error-free softball, and
Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) contributed a hit from the lead off spot.
Â
The Chargers will look to regroup quickly as they continue their Florida trip with games against Thomas and Aquinas College.
