WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A clutch three-run sixth inning lifted New Haven (14-5) to a 4-2 victory over rival Southern Connecticut (13-6) on Wednesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.
After falling behind 2-0 in the fifth, the Chargers responded in the bottom of the sixth with a timely offensive push. Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) ignited the rally with a leadoff double, setting the stage for Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) RBI single. Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade/Binghamton) followed with another run-scoring single to tie the game, and Joe Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) came around to score the go-ahead run on a fielding error.
New Haven added an insurance run in the eighth when Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) crossed the plate on a Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) single. The Chargers' bullpen held strong, with Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) picking up the win in relief and Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) slamming the door in the ninth to earn the save.
With the win, New Haven outhit Southern Connecticut 8-4 while playing error-free baseball, securing an important Northeast- 10 Conference victory. The Chargers return to action on Friday at 3 p.m. against Pace, opening a three-game weekend series at Vieira Field.
