Panthers and Chargers Split Thursday's Doubleheader

GARDEN CITY, NY – The University of New Haven Chargers traveled to Garden City, NY on Thursday afternoon for a conference doubleheader with the Adelphi Panthers. The Panthers topped the Chargers 7-2 in game one before the Chargers took the second game by a score of 3-2.

GAME ONE:
Adelphi got on the board first in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs off of Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka).

Already ahead 2-0, the Panthers tacked on four more in the bottom of the fifth inning. Two runs came after an obstruction call, resulting in those two runs being unearned.

The Chargers, showing fight, responded with two of their own in the top of the sixth inning. An RBI single from Olivia Roberto (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) plated Stephanie Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic), making it a 6-1 ballgame. One batter later, Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area)n brought home Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) with an infield single, making it 6-2.

The Panthers got one more in the bottom of the sixth, resulting in the 7-2 final.

Kinney lasted four and a third innings before being relieved by Peyton Sullivan (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post), who finished the game for the Chargers. Kinney's final line reads nine hits, five runs (all earned), no walks, and four strikeouts. Sullivan surrendered three hits, two runs (both earned), with one walk and  two punchouts.

Lily Kenney got the win for Adelphi after going the distance. In her seven innings, she only gave up three hits, two runs (both earned), hit two batters, and struck out five.

GAME TWO:
Following a scoreless first inning, the Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) brought home Peyton Sullivan (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) with a bunt down the third base line to open the scoring.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning evened the score at one. Another productive out came in the bottom of the third for the Panthers in the form of another sacrifice fly, this time putting Adelphi ahead 2-1.

The Chargers pulled back even in the top of the sixth via an RBI double off the bat of Truemann. Truemann's extra base hit drove in Chenet for the Chargers' second run. New Haven went ahead in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on an error by the Panthers in the field. Chenet hit the ball to the right side of the infield and Adelphi's second baseman couldn't handle it. It allowed Thorpe to score the game-winning run.

Katie Rhodes (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) went all seven innings for the Chargers, picking up her fourth win of the season. She only allowed five hits and two runs (both earned) in her outing. Jenna Plue also went the distance for Adelphi, allowing three hits, three runs (one earned), two walks, and nine strikeouts.

UNH is back in action on Friday, Apr. 19 in Pleasantville, NY to take on the Pace University Setters. First pitch of game one of the doubleheader is slated for 2:00 P.M.
