Schenk, Castiglione Net Matching Hat Tricks in Loss at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, NY – The University of New Haven Chargers visited the Adelphi University Panthers on Wednesday night with the top spot in the NE10 on the line. After a tightly-contested game, the Panthers, fueled by a three-goal fourth quarter, came away with the win.

Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) opened the scoring, netting her ninth goal of the season just under two minutes into the opening frame. Adelphi would tie the game at one 39 seconds later.

Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) scored the first of her three goals at the 11:34 mark of the first period, making it a 2-1 Charger lead. Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and Schenk would find the back of the net again for the Blue and Gold shortly after, making it a 4-1 lead for UNH.

Adelphi stormed back and tied the game early in the second quarter. Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich), Schenk, and Castiglione all scored in the second quarter, sending the Chargers into the break with a 7-6 lead.

Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) scored in the third quarter off an assist from Belmonte, while the Blue and Gold were up a player on the field and Castiglione finished off the hat trick in the third quarter. The Panthers found a way to stay in it again, and the third quarter finished with the teams tied at nine.

Adelphi got three more in the final frame while shutting down the Chargers offense, keeping them off the scoresheet in the fourth. Despite the combined six goals from Schenk and Castiglione, the Chargers could only find the back of the net three more times in their 12-9 loss.

Maddie Sage finished with eight saves in net for UNH while Madison Marchetta turned away five shots at the other end for the Panthers.

The Chargers will wrap up the regular season at home on Saturday, Apr. 19 with their Class of 2025 recognition game against Franklin Pierce at 1 P.M.
