Christian's Walkoff Single Completes Chargers Comeback Win

WEST HAVEN, CT – The University of New Haven Chargers won in come-from-behind fashion on Friday afternoon, beating the Adelphi Panthers 5-4 at home. Mike Christian's (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning completed the comeback win for UNH, who trailed 4-0 earlier in the game.

Adelphi got all of its offense in the top of the fourth inning. Three of the four runs came unearned after an error charged to Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) at first base.

The Chargers got one back in the bottom of the inning, as Kenny Franquiz singled home Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic), making it a 4-1 ballgame.

A three-run bottom of the fifth inning was next in store for New Haven, as Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) reached on an error by the Panthers third baseman, allowing Rob Taylor to score an unearned run. Cerruto would dart home on a wild pitch shortly after, bringing the Chargers to within a run. Finally, another RBI single from Franquiz tied the game at four, this time bringing in Wells.

The score stayed tied following Jafar Vohra's (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) work pitching out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the top of the ninth. The senior got a pop out to short, strikeout, and lineout to center to strand three men on base.

In the bottom of the ninth, Taylor led off with a single then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a Cerruto strikeout, the Panthers intentionally walked Wells to set up a potential inning-ending double play. Christian's walk-off single spoiled that plan.

The Chargers host the Panthers again tomorrow for the program's annual senior day celebration. The ceremony will begin at 11:40 and first pitch is slated for 12:00 P.M.
