HOOKSETT, NH – The University of New Haven Chargers split a doubleheader with the SNHU Penmen that began last Tuesday.
GAME ONE:
In an eleven-inning affair, the Penmen walked off the Chargers, 2-1.
Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area)n opened the scoring in the first inning, grounding into a double play but bringing home a run, making it 1-0 Chargers early.
SNHU was held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when it drew even off an RBI single from Mackenzie Bruggeman.
The score stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the 11th, when Charlotte Donovan singled home the game-winning run.
Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) pitched the whole game for UNH, needing 119 pitches in her 10-plus inning gem. Over the course of recording 31 outs, the sophomore allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned), and walked four.
Amelia Freitas also toed the rubber for the whole game, completing 11 innings. Needing 137 pitches, Freitas allowed one hit, one earned run, four walks, and five strikeouts.
GAME TWO:
Riding the momentum from their walk-off win from earlier, the Penmen scored three in the bottom of the first in game two.
New Haven got one back in the top of the second, making it a 3-1 game. Marzia Johnson's (Branford, Conn./Branford) sacrifice fly, scoring Jessica Petit (Berlin, Conn./Berlin), made it a two-run contest.
After a scoreless third inning, the Chargers posted a five-run fourth inning, going ahead 6-3. It began with an RBI single from Johnson, making it a one-run game. Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy), making it a 3-3 game. Stephanie Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) followed with an RBI single of her own, untying the game and giving New Haven the lead, 4-3. Truemann's two-run double made it a 6-3 game after clearing the bases.
SNHU got one back in the bottom of the fourth and one in the sixth, resulting in the 6-5 final.
Skyler Griffin got the win, going 4.2 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits. Julianna Colbert took the loss for SNHU, lasting 1.2 innings and allowing five earned runs on four hits.
