Sullivan Homers Twice, Chargers Swept

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The University of New Haven Chargers made the quick trip to Bridgeport on Wednesday afternoon to play two with the Purple Knights of Bridgeport University. Bridgeport got late offense in both games, helping it escape with both wins.

GAME ONE:
Breanna Truemann's RBI groundout in the first inning was all the offense the Chargers could muster in game one.

The Purple Knights responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to go ahead, 2-1. Bridgeport also picked up another run in the bottom of the second inning, making it a 3-1 lead.

Two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning made it a 5-1 game and the final score held.

Brianna Kinney pitched for the Chargers, lasting innings and surrendering three earned runs on four hits and one walk.

Kaite Burawski started in the circle for the Purple Knights, earning the win. She pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out five.

GAME TWO:
In the bottom of the seventh, the Purple Knights walked off the Chargers, 9-8.

New Haven scored eight of its nine runs in the first two innings, with a pair in the opening frame and a half dozen in the second inning.

Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) knocked in Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) and Victoria Miller (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) by reaching on an error, putting the Chargers ahead 2-0.

In the second, UNH exploded for six runs, beginning with Chenet's RBI single to center, scoring Marzia Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford). Stephanie Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) followed with the same result, bringing home Chenet.

Peyton Sullivan's (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) grand slam blew the open, 6-0 in the top of the second. Smith, Miller, and Jessica Petit (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) all scored on the homer.

Bridgeport responded with six of its own in the bottom half of the inning, making it an 8-6 game after two innings. The Purple Knights got another run in the bottom of the third, making it a one-run game.

Sullivan caught another barrel in the fourth, sending the ball flying over the wall. This time it was a solo shot to left field. The right fielder finished with five runs batted in, good for a new career high.

A two-run double in the bottom of the seventh from Sydnee Perreault ended the game.

Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) pitched game two for the Chargers, finishing with 1.1 innings pitched, six runs (two earned), and a walk. Kinney was hit with the loss after pitching the final two innings and allowing a pair of earned runs on two hits.
