Back and Forth Tilt Goes Greyhounds Way, 14-13

WEST HAVEN, CT – The University of New Haven Chargers hosted the Assumption Greyhounds in the first round of the Northeast-10 playoffs on Saturday afternoon. In a back-and-forth offensive battle, the Greyhounds squeaked out a win by the slimmest of margins, advancing to the semi-finals, 14-13. Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) recorded her 100th career draw control off the opening faceoff.

The Chargers were off and running early, taking a 3-0 lead following a pair of goals from Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) and Castiglione. Schenk's second marker came off a free position attempt and Castiglione's tally was set up by Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton).

From there, the Greyhounds scored five straight goals to go ahead 5-3.

Schenk answered early in the second quarter, finishing the hat trick, making it a one-goal game.

Assumption quickly restored its two-goal lead 46 seconds later, upping the score to 6-4.

Finding another gear, the Chargers rallied for five consecutive goals to close out the first half. The run began with a pair of goals from Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport), tying the score at six. Lucy Shafer (Haymarket, Va./Battfield) would give the Blue and Gold a 7-6 lead before Schenk once again found the back of the net. Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) put an exclamation point on the first half, scoring to make it a 9-6 New Haven lead after 30 minutes.

The Greyhounds came out of the break on a mission and netted the first four goals of the second half, going back on top 10-9.

Schenk's fifth of the game brought New Haven back even, 10-10 in the third quarter.

After Assumption went ahead 11-10, Sophia Minnion (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) scored while the Chargers were a player up, tying the game again, this time at 11.

Heading into the final frame knotted at 11, the Greyhounds struck first to make it 12-11.

Belmonte finished off the hat trick soon after, bringing the score to a dozen each.

Back-to-back goals later in the fourth proved to be the difference for the Greyhounds, as they went ahead 14-12.

Caprioli found the back of the net for UNH with under two and a half minutes remaining, making it a one-goal game again, but the Chargers ran out of time to find another equalizer.

Skyler Troyan earned the win in net for the Greyhounds after making 11 saves on 24 shots. Maddie Sage turned away 10 of 24 at the other end for the Chargers.
