Schenk Hits Rare Air as Chargers Pick up First-Round Win

GARDEN CITY, NY – The University of New Haven Chargers began their NCAA Tournament run with a 20-12 win over fellow Northeast-10 school St. Anselm on Thursday afternoon at Adelphi University campus. The Chargers will face the Panthers on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the tournament. Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) eclipsed the 60-goal mark in the contest, becoming the seventh player in program history to go 0-60 in a single season.

The Blue and Gold went ahead 3-0 on a trio of goals from Schenk, Sophia Minnion (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), and Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial). Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) assisted on Schenk's game-opening goal and Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) picked up the helper on Minnion's marker.

Following a St. Anselm goal, Castiglione and Schenk lit the lamp again, opening up a 5-1 lead for the Chargers. That lead would grow to 6-2 by the end of the first quarter as Castiglione set up Schenk for a goal with one second left in the opening frame.

After the Hawks scored the first goal of the second quarter, New Haven ripped off five straight, ballooning its lead to 11-3. Schenk found the back of the net again off a feed from Emma Cretella (Cheshire, Conn./St. Paul Catholic). Goals from Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport), Cretella, Schenk again, and Cretella from Dunwoody followed.

Dunwoody found the back of the net off a set up from Caprioli for the Chargers first goal of the second half, making the score 12-4. In between St. Anselm goals, Castiglione scored a goal with the Chargers up one on the field.

Dunwoody picked up back-to-back goals later in the game as the Chargers closed out the third quarter ahead 15-8.

With the score 15-10 early in the fourth and the Hawks seeming to have found some momentum, the Caprioli Show began. The next three goals for New Haven all came from the senior midfielder and the Blue and Gold were back in the driver's seat comfortably with time winding down.

Castiglione and Belmonte each found twine before the final horn, sending New Haven off to the second round of the tournament.
