Mavericks Escape with One-Run Win in Barn Burner

WEST HAVEN, CT – The University of New Haven Chargers hosted the Mavericks of Mercy University on Wednesday afternoon in the team's final home game of the regular season. The Mavs came out on top, 14-13.

Mercy got the scoring started early with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. New Haven plated three in the bottom of the frame to hold a 3-2 lead after one. For the Chargers, Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) doubled home Jake Russo (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) and EJ Ettinger (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) singled him home along with Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown).

Mercy scored three times in the second inning before getting another three in the third, going up 8-3 through two-and-a-half innings.

Ettinger reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Wells in the bottom of the inning.

A solo home run in the top of the fourth made it 9-4 before Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) responded with a solo shot of his own to make it 9-5.

The Mavericks got a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, stretching their lead to 11-5. A three-run bottom of the seventh for New Haven made it 11-8. McIntire's RBI single got the inning started. Ettinger's sacrifice fly allowed McIntire to score. Aedan Ford singled home Wells later in the inning.

Mercy picked up another run in the top of the eighth to make it 12-8.

McIntire and Ettinger both drove in another run each in the bottom of the inning, putting UNH in double digits and the score became 12-10.

A two-run double in the top of the ninth proved to be the difference as Russo doubled home a pair in the bottom of the inning, making it 14-12. Wells reached on error and Russo scored the game's final run resulting in the 14-13 final.

Timmy Lewis was hit with the loss for the Chargers after pitching two innings in relief and giving up five hits, three runs (two earned), and a walk.

The Chargers will travel to Springfield, MA this weekend for a huge three-game series with AIC. The results of those three games will have heavy playoff implications for the Chargers, who can still finish anywhere from first through fourth in the Southwest Division of the Northeast-10.
