Chargers Dominate Second Half in 16-6 Win Over No. 18 Bentley, Celebrate 25 Years of Women’s Lacrosse

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – In a game that celebrated 25 years of University of New Haven Women's Lacrosse, the Chargers delivered a performance to remember with a commanding 16-6 win over nationally ranked No. 18 Bentley in a pivotal NE10 match-up on Saturday afternoon at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

Surrounded by over 100 alumni, family, friends, and fans gathered to honor the program's rich history, the Chargers rose to the occasion, putting together a dominant second-half surge to remain undefeated in conference play.

Bentley struck first, finding the back of the net just over a minute into the opening quarter. But New Haven responded in a big way, rattling off five straight goals—three of them from Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn., Pomperaug, Endicott) to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive battle, with the Chargers managing just one goal while Bentley added two, making it a tight 6-4 contest heading into halftime.

The momentum shifted drastically in the third, as the Chargers exploded with 10 unanswered goals—seven of which came in the third quarter alone. Schenk and Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I., East Greenwich, ) led the offensive charge, each netting six goals. Dunwoody also dished out an assist, and the duo dominated the draw circle, combining for all 10 of New Haven's draw controls (Schenk with six, Dunwoody with four).

Schenk also made her presence felt on defense with two caused turnovers, while Justine Doyle (Derry, N.H., Pinkerton Academy)added two of her own and Sam Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) (#8) contributed one.

Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y., Bellport) added two critical back-to-back goals within a minute of each other during the third-quarter run. Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y., Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H., Pinkerton) each added a goal to round out the scoring.

Goalkeeper Madeline Sage (Manchester, N.H., Goffstown High School) had a standout day in net, making 10 saves and anchoring a stifling Chargers defense that held Bentley scoreless for the entire second half.

With the win, New Haven improves to 6-0 in NE10 play. The Chargers will return to Kathy Zolad Stadium on Tuesday, April 8, for their next NE10 matchup against American International College at 4:00 PM.
