SPRINGFIELD, MA – The University of New Haven Chargers traveled to Springfield, MA on Wednesday morning for their Northeast-10 Conference First-Round playoff game. The Yellow Jackets of American International College topped the Chargers 6-4.
Casey Cerruto's (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) RBI single in the first inning gave the Chargers an early 1-0 lead that would stay untouched until Cerruto sent a ball over the wall in the fourth inning, doubling the Blue and Gold lead.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, got another pair in the fifth, and picked up another run in the sixth to go ahead 5-2.
In the top of the eighth inning, with the bases loaded,
Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) was drilled by a pitch that forced in a run, making it 5-3. Joe Frazetta followed with a single to right center that brought in
Mike Christian (Audubon, Pa./Methacton), cutting the AIC lead to 5-4.
A solo homer in the bottom of the inning restored the Yellow Jackets two-run lead at 6-4. That score would hold and be the final.
Michael Gatti (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) suffered the loss for New Haven, allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits across five innings.
The Chargers had opportunities but never got a big hit with runners on base that really get them in good position.
