Chargers Fall in Season Opener

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -- New Haven Football opened its 2025 season on the road as it visited the Red Foxes of Marist University on Friday night. The Blue & Gold fell behind in the first quarter and could not muster a large enough comeback to open its season with a win, losing 31-14.

Marist posted a 17-point first quarter, highlighted by a 59-yard touchdown run on fourth down by Tristan Shannon.

New Haven got itself on the board in the second quarter as AJ Duffy (St. Augustine, Fla./Rancho Verde) found Evan Chieca (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) from five yards out to pull within 17-7. Duffy fired another touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, this time to Logan Schmidt (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring). Schmidt's score made the game 24-14.

With under a minute remaining, a special teams miscue gifted the Red Foxes a touchdown, resulting in the 31-14 final.

Duffy finished 31/55 for 377 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Josh Tracey hauled in nine passes for 145 yards, and Kevonne Wilder (Bronx, N.Y./) brought reeled in six catches for 95 yards.

Dre Kirton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity) led the defense with 10 total tackles. Luke Kelley (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and Sebastian Conwell (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood) each notched a sack, while Sir Hezekiah Ragland (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and Pete Melle (Dallas, Tx./Dallas Jesuit College Prep) picked up half a sack each.

New Haven will travel to Northwest Pennsylvania on Saturday, Sept. 6, looking for its first win. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
