WEST HAVEN, Conn. – New Haven Football hosted its first game as a Division I program on Saturday afternoon, coming away with a 35-28 win over Saginaw Valley State University.
AJ Duffy (St. Augustine, Fla./Rancho Verde) threw four first-half touchdown passes in the win for the Blue & Gold.
Nine different Chargers caught passes from the two-time NEC Player of the Week, who finished 19/34 for 266 yards and four scores.
Kevonne Wilder (Bronx, N.Y./) was Duffy's favorite target, hauling in seven receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown. Josh Tracey finished with 69 yards on a pair of catches, both touchdowns.
Logan Schmidt (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) caught Duffy's other touchdown, a 41-yard toss in the first quarter.
Jalen Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) picked up 56 yards on the yards, pacing the Blue & Gold. Wilder's 45 rushing yards netted him 119 yards of all-purpose yardage on the day.
Zaon Laney (Hoboken, N.J./Rahway) carried the ball most often for New Haven, finishing with 11 carries for 31 yards.
Defensively,
Luke Kelley (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) registered the Chargers only sack of the day.
Brodie Williams (West Memphis, Ark./Academies of Jonesboro High School) and
Sir Hezekiah Ragland (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) each totaled eight tackles, leading the squad.
Dre Kirton (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity) broke up a pair of passes in the secondary. Williams,
Sebastian Conwell (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood), and
Nikkem Reynolds (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) all broke up a pass of their own.
New Haven is back on the road on Saturday, Sept. 27, as it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. to matchup with the Dukes of Duquesne University. Opening kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
