PITTSBURGH, Pa. – New Haven Football traveled to the Keystone State for an NEC matchup with the Duquesne Dukes on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers scored on their first play from scrimmage but wound up losing 44-18.
AJ Duffy (St. Augustine, Fla./Rancho Verde) found Josh Tracey all alone behind the defense on New Haven's first offensive snap for 56 yards to go ahead 6-0, but the Chargers offense was held scoreless the rest of the first half.
The Dukes struck for 35 unanswered points between New Haven touchdowns, opening up a 35-6 lead until 100 seconds left to play in the third when
Zaon Laney (Hoboken, N.J./Rahway) scored from a yard out. Laney had a 51-yard run earlier in the drive to set up the Blue & Gold inside the Duquesne five-yard line.
Kevonne Wilder (Bronx, N.Y.) took a screen pass 19 yards to the end zone with 11:59 remaining in the game, making it 35-18. New Haven went for two but the pass was intercepted and returned by Duquesne, making it 37-18.
A final touchdown from the Dukes with 4:51 to play made it a 44-18 final.
Duffy finished 18/29 for 184 yards and a pair of touchdowns as well as two interceptions. Laney led the rushing attack with 11 carries for 66 yards and a score. Wilder hauled in eight passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.
New Haven hosts Pace University on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 1:00 p.m. The game is program's homecoming game and will highlight the Athletics' 37th Hall of Fame Class, to be inducted that weekend.
