TEANECK, N.J. — New Haven Baseball faced a tough series against Fairleigh Dickinson University, suffering three consecutive losses over the weekend.
On Friday, New Haven (1-12, 1-3) was defeated 17-2 at the Naimoli Complex. The Chargers registered three hits and two runs, while Fairleigh Dickinson (11-7, 6-1) dominated with 15 hits, including three home runs. New Haven started strong, with
Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) walking and advancing to third on a single by
Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic).
Jake Russo (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) drove Callahan home with a single, putting New Haven on the board. However, Fairleigh Dickinson quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-1 lead.
The third inning saw Fairleigh Dickinson extend its lead with a double from Urreta, making it 3-1. The fourth inning added three more runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from Gomez, pushing the lead to 6-1. In the fifth, Cheeseman's two-RBI single and Delamota's two-RBI double increased their advantage to 10-1. New Haven's
Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) managed to score again in the sixth, but Fairleigh Dickinson countered with a seven-run effort, including a grand slam from Quagliato, concluding the game at 17-2.
Pitching struggles marked the day, with
Cole Gibson (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlow) allowing six hits and three earned runs in three innings.
Myles McDermott (Braintree, Mass./Arch Bishop Williams) and
Blake Beattie (Glastonbury, Conn./Xavier) also faced challenges, contributing to a total of 11 earned runs by the Chargers' pitching staff. Callahan shone offensively, scoring two runs and drawing two walks, while Cerruto recorded two hits.
The following day, New Haven (1-13, 1-4) fell again to Fairleigh Dickinson (12-7, 7-1), this time with a score of 7-3. The Chargers tallied eight hits and three runs, highlighted by a two-run fourth inning. Fairleigh Dickinson took an early lead with a solo home run by Mantuano in the second. New Haven equalized in the third when
Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) scored on
Nick Ungania's (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) sacrifice fly. However, Fairleigh Dickinson quickly regained control with a two-RBI double, making it 4-1.
In the fourth, Frazzetta's two-RBI single brought the score to 4-3, marking a season-high for him. Yet, Fairleigh Dickinson would not relent, scoring three more runs in the sixth inning to finalize the score at 7-3.
Max Hilsenroth (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) started for New Haven, allowing three earned runs in three innings, while
Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) pitched a season-high five innings, allowing three runs. Frazzetta was again a standout, leading the Chargers with two hits and two RBIs.
On Sunday, New Haven faced Fairleigh Dickinson once more, losing 6-1. The Chargers initially took a 1-0 lead with
Shaun Callahan's (Newington, Conn./Newington) solo home run in the first inning. Fairleigh Dickinson responded with a two-run homer by Cheeseman in the second, then took control in the pivotal third inning with a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer from Cheeseman, ultimately leading to a 6-1 score.
Mason Glickman (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) pitched four innings, allowing six earned runs, while Jace Vanvalkneburg and
Carson Morgan (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) provided relief with scoreless innings. Callahan led the offense with three hits, including his home run, while Cerruto added a double.
