FAIRFIELD, Conn. — New Haven earned a narrow 3-2 victory over Fairfield on Wednesday evening, thanks to a solo home run in the seventh inning. Fairfield scored in the second and fourth innings, but New Haven's two-run sixth inning and late game-winning run were decisive.
Fairfield initially took the lead in the second inning when Lauren Osland tripled, bringing home Delaney Whieldon to make it 1-0.
In the fourth inning, Anna Paravati of Fairfield scored on a single by Sarah Bielski, extending the lead to 2-0.
New Haven responded in the sixth inning.
Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) singled up the middle, driving in
Lucia Ceccarelli (Griswold, Conn./Griswold).
Allison Murai (Sammamish, WA/Skyline High School) then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Bri Pellicone (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown), tying the game 2-2.
In the seventh inning,
Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area) hit a solo home run to left field, giving the Chargers a 3-2 lead. Fairfield was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, securing the victory for the Blue & Gold.
Peyton Sullivan (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) pitched for New Haven, delivering 5 innings with 60 pitches, allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 2 and walking none, maintaining a WHIP of 1.40. Sullivan recorded 7 groundouts and 4 flyouts against 21 batters faced.
