Wagner Completes Sweep of New Haven in Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New Haven Softball endured a tough series against Wagner College, suffering three losses over the weekend.

In the first matchup on Saturday, the Chargers fell to Wagner 3-0, managing four hits. Aaliyah Amidon (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) led the charge with a double, and Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area) added a single. Wagner broke through with a three-run rally in the third inning, highlighted by a groundout RBI from Payton Janicki.

Peyton Sullivan (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits, while Cecelia Imbimbo (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) showed strong performance in relief, throwing 3 2/3 scoreless innings with one hit and two strikeouts.

In the second game, New Haven lost 2-0. The Chargers managed six hits but could not capitalize on scoring opportunities. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Ava Nawrocki's double led to Wagner's first run, followed by another in the sixth inning on a single by Sydnie Trujillo. New Haven attempted a comeback in the seventh, with Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) hitting a double, but it was not enough to change the outcome.

Katie Rhodes (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and two earned runs, while striking out two batters. Offensively, Thorpe led with two hits.

In their final game on Sunday, New Haven fell to Wagner 8-2. The Chargers took an early lead in the first inning with Jess Petit's double scoring Jaclyn Piazza (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy). However, Wagner quickly equalized and then surged ahead with a four-run rally in the third inning. New Haven managed to narrow the gap in the fourth with a run from Lucia Ceccarelli (Griswold, Conn./Griswold), but Wagner's consistent hitting, including a two-RBI single from Emma Chambers, solidified their victory.

Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) started for the Chargers, allowing three earned runs over two innings. Cecelia Imbimbo (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) and Katie Rhodes (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) pitched in relief, with Rhodes striking out three over 3 1/3 innings.

Up next, the Chargers will host Fairfield University on Wednesday, April 1, at 3 p.m. at New Haven Softball Field in West Haven, Connecticut.
