WEST HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven baseball fell to the University of Rhode Island 13-3 on Tuesday, with New Haven's early three-run second inning overshadowed by Rhode Island's five-run rallies in the fourth and fifth innings.
New Haven (8-28, 7-14) managed six hits but issued 13 walks, while Rhode Island (18-25, 11-10) capitalized with 14 hits, including a home run.
Rhode Island took an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Ryan Thompson's single and Reece Moroney's double to left center, followed by Jack Hopko's sacrifice fly, put Rhode Island ahead 2-0. The Chargers were held scoreless in their half of the inning, leaving two on base. Rhode Island led 2-0 after the first inning.
New Haven responded in the second inning, scoring three runs to take the lead.
Bobby Herzman (Cheshire, Conn./HC Wilcox) singled and later scored on a balk.
Aedan Forde (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who also singled, came home on a wild pitch, and
Jaylin Manson (Newington, Conn./Newington) crossed the plate following
Shaun Callahan's (Newington, Conn./Newington) RBI single, giving New Haven a 3-2 advantage. The Blue & Gold held a 3-2 lead through two innings.
Rhode Island evened the score in the third inning. Ryan Henschel walked and advanced to third on Scott Penney's single, before scoring on a single by Ryan Thompson. A fielding error by the left fielder allowed Penney to reach third, but no further runs scored. The game was tied 3-3 after three innings.
In the fourth inning, Rhode Island surged ahead with five runs. Nicholas Toro walked, and a series of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. Ryan Henschel's walk brought in a run, and Scott Penney's double cleared the bases, scoring three more. Reece Moroney added another RBI with a single, extending the lead to 8-3. Rhode Island led 8-3 after four innings.
Rhode Island added another five runs in the fifth inning. Following two singles, Reece Moroney's two-RBI single and Jack Hopko's three-run homer expanded the lead to 13-3. This advantage held through the rest of the game, as New Haven's offense was kept scoreless, leaving three runners on base in the fifth inning.
Neither team scored in the final four innings. Rhode Island's pitching staff managed to keep New Haven's hitters in check, securing a 13-3 victory for Rhode Island.
Mason Glickman (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) started for the Chargers, pitching three innings and recording five strikeouts while allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks.
Robert Synodi (Hebron, C.T./RHAM) faced challenges in his appearance, giving up four earned runs without recording an out, issuing three walks and hitting a batter.
Justin Eckrote (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits, including a home run, with two walks.
Myles McDermott (Braintree, Mass./Arch Bishop Williams), Kaleb Martinek,
Blake Beattie (Glastonbury, Conn./Xavier), and
Carson Morgan (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) each contributed in relief, with Martinek striking out two batters over his one inning of work.
Jaylin Manson (Newington, Conn./Newington) contributed with a hit, a run, a stolen base, and a walk.
Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) recorded one hit and drove in a run while being hit by a pitch.
Chase McNally (Methacton, Pa./Methacton) highlighted his performance with two stolen bases and was hit by a pitch.
Mason Glickman (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) pitched three innings, striking out five batters while allowing three earned runs.
