POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — New Haven women's volleyball lost to Marist 3-0 on Wednesday in a road match and their last of non-conference play. The Chargers were held to 27 kills and a .137 hitting percentage, while Marist recorded 45 kills and hit .389. Freshman
Quinn Yenshaw (Williamsburg, Mich./St. Francis) led New Haven with 10 kills.
After Marist scored the first two points, the Chargers pulled even with kills from freshman
Marley Alefaio (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes),
Payton Malinoski (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township), and Yenshaw, along with a
Zaira Kearns (Fairway, Kan./Pembroke Hill)-
Kira Lynch (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown Area) block to reach 8-8. Marist broke that tie with five straight points to move ahead 13-8. The Blue & Gold later used back-to-back Yenshaw kills to pull within 15-12. Marist extended the lead to 22-14 before the Chargers answered with late two-point stretches, including kills by
Lauren MacKellar (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Northville), but Marist reached set point on a service error and closed the set 25-18 on a Mallory Reck kill.
The Chargers opened the second set with a
Lauren Fick (Lakeville, Minn./Rosemount) service ace, but Marist answered and moved ahead 4-2 after a Caelyn Dumas ace and a
Josie Foster (Brisbane, Australia/Kelvin Grove State College) attack error. After Foster's kill pulled the Blue & Gold within 4-3, Marist scored the next seven points behind a Molly Malone kill, three Mallory Reck service aces, a Trinity Woods kill, and two Chargers attack errors to build an 11-3 lead. The Chargers got points from MacKellar,
Shaelyn Campbell (Austin, Texas/Rouse), and Yenshaw as the set continued, but Marist pushed the margin to 23-10 on an Ava Lanzetta kill. Campbell and Yenshaw added late kills, and Lynch and Yenshaw combined on a block to make it 23-13 before Marist closed the set 25-13.
Marist scored the first two points of the third set before Lynch and Campbell combined on a block, and the Chargers stayed within 6-4 on kills by Yenshaw, Foster, and MacKellar. Marist created separation with five straight points to move ahead 11-4, then answered a Campbell kill with another run that included a Cecilia Potter-Pessoa ace and Taylor Miller kill for a 15-6 lead. The Blue & Gold got late kills from Campbell, Yenshaw, and Foster, but Marist stretched the margin to 21-10 and closed the set with a block by Ava Lanzetta and Savannah Smith for a 25-13 finish.
Highlighting the Chargers' efforts, freshman Yenshaw led New Haven with 10 kills on 25 attacks and added one block assist. Lynch collected a team-high five total blocks, all on block assists, and added a dig. Campbell contributed five kills while hitting .231 and had one block assist in her first appearance of the year.
The Chargers are 4-10 overall. Marist is 5-8 overall.
Up next, New Haven will host Central Connecticut State University on Friday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. at The Hazell Center in West Haven, Conn. for the start of NEC play.
