ERIE, Pa. — New Haven women's soccer defeated Mercyhurst 1-0 on Sunday. The Chargers preserved the shutout during a late Mercyhurst push, withstanding six attacking actions from 79:28 to 86:44 without conceding.
New Haven kept Mercyhurst off the board through a first half in which
Trinitie Maloney (Brick, N.J./Brick Township High School) made five saves, including stops in the 36th and 40th minutes during a late Mercyhurst push. Earlier, Mariana Alves supplied the Chargers' first three shots, and New Haven added corner kicks in the 22nd and 27th minutes as they worked into the attacking third.
Emily Marco (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) put a shot on goal in the 36th minute, but Alyssa Alcorn saved it, and
Bianca Cevallos (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn High School) forced another save in the 43rd after Mercyhurst's Caterina Cappiello was shown a red card. The Chargers held through the closing minutes, and the half ended 0-0.
Janayah Body (West Hartford, Conn./Lawrence Academy) scored at 63:52 to put New Haven ahead 1-0, providing the only goal of the second half. It was Body's first goal of the season. Earlier, the Chargers opened the half with immediate pressure, earning a corner kick at 45:16 before Alves put two shots on frame that were saved. Alves recorded a season-high of five shots.
Jordan Galica (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) helped keep the match scoreless during Mercyhurst's push around the hour, stopping Sadie Lewis' shot at 58:57 before New Haven answered with
Maxine Samson's (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) attempt and Body's goal. The Chargers continued to press after taking the lead with two corners and three shots from 72:30 to 74:59, then absorbed a late Mercyhurst stretch that included five shots and a corner, with Galica making another save at 86:44. The half ended with New Haven closing out the 1-0 result.
Body scored the Chargers' unassisted game-winning goal, converting her lone shot on goal. It was her first game-winning goal of the season. Maloney recorded five saves over 45 minutes without allowing a goal. Alves led New Haven with five shots and put two on goal. Galica added two saves in 45 minutes without conceding.
Up next, the Chargers will host Wagner College on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at Kathy Zolad Stadium in West Haven, Conn.
