Gagliastro Scores Twice as LIU Tops New Haven

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — New Haven Field Hockey fell to LIU 4-3 on Tuesday. Jordan Gagliastro (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) scored twice for New Haven.

New Haven generated the first chances of the first quarter, earning a penalty corner by Taylor Amstutz (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) at :47 and putting shots from Lauren Schoonmaker (High Falls, N.Y.) and Jalia Cooper (Millville, N.J./Saint Joseph Academy) on cage or into the defense in the first two minutes. LIU answered with a corner and two shots, then went ahead 1-0 at 9:58 when Delfina Gonzalez scored off an assist from Avery Bergvall. After Cara Lambert (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) saved a Lilly Clark shot, the Blue & Gold came back late in the quarter as Cooper forced a save at 13:25 and Amstutz finished a feed from Cooper 10 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1 through the end of the first quarter.

After Lambert stopped Delfina Gonzalez at 15:38, LIU built pressure with two penalty corners and shots from Tess Termars that were blocked and saved before Ava Peters scored at 18:06 to give LIU a 2-1 lead. LIU added another penalty corner at 22:20, but the Chargers made their push late in the second quarter. Emma Hulslander (Groton, Mass.) forced a save at 28:36, and after penalty corners, Amstutz, Cooper, Emma Beaujouan (Concord, N.H./Concord) and Lauren Schoonmaker (High Falls, N.Y.) each put shots on goal that Taryn Dolka saved as LIU took the 2-1 score into halftime.

The Blue & Gold put pressure on LIU early in the third quarter, with Jordan Gagliastro (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) forcing saves from Taryn Dolka at 30:49 and 32:59 around Lambert's stop on Tori Bove at 32:08. After Lotte van Dusseldorp missed wide for LIU, the Chargers generated chances from Cooper, Lauren Schoonmaker (High Falls, N.Y.) and Liz Trentmann (Amsterdam, Netherlands), including penalty-corner pressure created by Abbie Volfman (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg). LIU earned a corner at 41:24 and Lambert saved Lilly Clark's shot, but the Blue & Gold came back with two more corners and three shots before Gagliastro scored off Volfman's assist at 43:44 to tie the game at 2-2 entering the fourth quarter.

Lambert turned aside Tori Bove's shot at 46:05, and LIU earned a penalty corner seconds later as the fourth quarter opened with pressure in the Chargers' defensive end.
