WEST HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven lost to Stonehill 21-3 on Saturday at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium.
New Haven turned its opening possession into points, moving 43 yards after
Logan Schmidt's (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) 27-yard return and a Stonehill offside penalty before
Liam Quigley (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Govenor Livingston) made a 21-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
The Chargers were held scoreless in the second quarter while Stonehill turned two short-field possessions into touchdowns, including a 1-yard Aidan Garrett run that made it 14-3 and a 31-yard Jack O'Connell pass to Torance Washington Jr. that pushed the score to 21-3.
Abdoul Bah's (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) sack and
Irv Briggs' (Queens Village, N.Y./Holy Trinity) tackle for loss helped New Haven force a punt on Stonehill's opening possession, but the Chargers finished the quarter with two first downs and went 0-for-4 on third down.
AJ Duffy (St. Augustine, Fla./Rancho Verde) hit
Matt Chandler (Oviedo, Fla./East Coast Prep) for 27 yards on a late drive, and the quarter ended with Stonehill ahead 21-3. Bah also recorded a tackle and forced a fumble, marking the first of each for him this season.
New Haven kept Stonehill off the scoreboard in the third quarter, but the offense came away empty on three possessions that reached Stonehill territory. Lasalle Rose Jr.'s 42-yard punt return set up a drive at the Stonehill 30, and Duffy later moved the Chargers with completions to
Zaon Laney (Hoboken, N.J./Rahway), Thomas Troy, and Rose before two fourth-down incompletions and an interception ended those chances. Stonehill had the ball at New Haven's 27 when the quarter ended, with the Chargers trailing 21-3.
The Chargers kept Stonehill off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with two goal-line stops, first getting a touchback when Aidan Garrett fumbled at New Haven's 1 and later stopping Jack O'Connell for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Chargers' 1. Laney followed the second stand with a 44-yard run, and New Haven also regained possession after Duffy's interception when
Matt Chandler (Oviedo, Fla./East Coast Prep) forced a fumble on the return and
Brian Thomas (Apopka, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep) recovered at the Chargers' 4. The scoreless quarter closed a 21-3 Stonehill win.
Laney rushed for 114 yards on 17 carries and added three catches for 16 yards. Duffy completed 17 of 35 passes for 173 yards. Rikervin Encarnacion led the Chargers with 13 tackles.
Matt Chandler (Oviedo, Fla./East Coast Prep) caught four passes for 49 yards and forced a fumble.
Up next, New Haven will travel to Brookings, S.D., to face South Dakota State University on Saturday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
