DURHAM, N.H. — The New Haven men's soccer team fell to the University of New Hampshire, 6-2, on Tuesday night at Wildcat Stadium. The Chargers received goals from Andres Lazo and Richard Henry, while Matheus Guimaraes added an assist.
New Hampshire opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Mikael Pulkkinen finished a setup from David Davila and Miguel Soto Gonzalez. The Wildcats doubled their advantage in the 24th minute as Daniel Firek scored off another Davila and Soto Gonzalez combination. New Haven created several opportunities throughout the opening half, with Pol Bota Gutierrez recording two shots on goal that were saved by New Hampshire goalkeeper Aaron Choi. Guimaraes also tested Choi with a shot on frame in the 29th minute, while Londell Wheeler added an attempt late in the half. The Chargers entered halftime trailing 2-0.
The Chargers came out strong in the second half, cutting the deficit in half in the 48th minute when Lazo finished off a Guimaraes assist. New Hampshire responded in the 66th minute when Cabot McLaren restored the two-goal advantage, but New Haven answered just 44 seconds later. Henry found the back of the net off assists from Trevor Pegg and Lazo to make it 3-2.
New Hampshire pulled away late, scoring three times in a span of just under 18 minutes. Soto Gonzalez scored in the 71st minute before Xahvi DeRoza added another 35 seconds later. Augie Hoelscher capped the scoring in the 89th minute, with Ryo Miyata providing the assist. New Haven continued to push offensively late, but the Chargers were unable to find another goal.
Lazo finished with one goal, one assist and one shot on goal, while Henry recorded one goal on one shot. Guimaraes added one assist and led New Haven with three shots. Pegg also recorded an assist, while Bota Gutierrez finished with two shots, both on goal. As a team, New Haven recorded nine shots, including six on goal, and eight corner kicks.
New Haven is back in action on September 12th vs Fairfield. Kickoff is 6PM and can be seen on ESPN+.
