(02-09-09) SOUTH EASTON, Mass. - Tyrone Sawyer and Shannon Gagne of the University of New Haven indoor track and field team have been named the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Men's and Women's Track Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 8. Freshmen Kevin Downing and Alesha Chu Foo also grabbed NE-10 Freshman of the Week honors.
Sawyer won the 60 meter dash with a time 6.85 seconds and provisionally qualifies for the NCAA Championships. He also finished seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.64 seconds.
Gagne finished second in the 200 meter dash with a new UNH record of 25.01 seconds. Gagne was also third in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.83 seconds and finished second in the Long Jump with a jump of 5.45 meters.
Downing, the NE-10 Freshman Track Athlete of the Week, won his third straight 200 meter dash at the Giegengack Invitational with a time of 21.86 seconds. Chu Foo, the NE-10 Freshman Field Athlete of the Week, led UNH in the high jump with a ninth place finish and a height of 1.55 meter. She also ran the second leg of the UNH Distance Medley Relay team which broke a school record with a time of 13:10.87.
The Chargers men's and women's indoor track and field teams return to action at the Lafayette/Rider Invitational on Friday, February 13. The meet will take place at the New York Armory in New York City.
