Women's Volleyball Takes Four Set Match at AIC

(10-21-09) SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated American International College 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-20) Wednesday night. With the win the Chargers improve to 19-4 overall and 10-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 14-9 overall and 5-6 in the NE-10.

UNH and AIC played the opening set fairly close. Neither team grabbed a lead over two points, while the Yellow Jackets were the last ones to take a lead when they scored the final two points to take a 25-23 victory.

In the second set, the Chargers found themselves behind early. UNH trailed 9-5, 14-9 and 21-17 later in the set. The Chargers went on to score nine of the last 12 points to rally and take a 26-14 victory in set two.

The Chargers and Yellow Jackets were tied at 6-6 early in the third set, before scoring 10 of the next 19 points and taking a 16-9 lead. UNH cruised to the 25-19 lead in the set.

The teams began the third set very similar to the second, playing to an 8-8 tie early. The Chargers then went on a 4-0 run to take a 12-8 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. UNH led by at least three throughout the remainder of the set, including a 21-14 lead late. Sara Malmlov sealed the match victory with a kill for the Chargers' 25th point.

Malmlov led the Chargers with 17 kills, while Keidy Candelaria added 16 kills. Sophomore middle Elizabeth Akinbiyi added 10 kills and three total blocks. Heather Ladao registered a team-high 16 digs, while Chelsey Alpough helped with 47 assists in the match.

The Chargers return to action against fellow undefeated NE-10 opponent Adelphi University on Friday. The Chargers host the Panthers at Charger Gymnasium at 4 p.m. The match is the Chargers' Dig for the Cure match, the team will be collecting donations all week long for cancer research.
