(11-21-09) PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 57-44 Saturday afternoon to nationally ranked No. 17 Holy Family University. With the loss the Chargers fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 1-1.
The Chargers kept the game close throughout the first half, but their only leads of the game came in the opening minutes. Nicole Pollard hit a three-pointer to put New Haven up 3-2 and two baskets later when Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty put back a layup to put UNH up 5-4. The Tigers would continue to improve upon their lead which grew to as many as nine four times in the opening half. With one second left in the half, Dominique Stellmacher hit a jumper to bring the Chargers within seven, 28-21.
New Haven struggled with 16 first half turnovers, while the Tigers also grabbed 12 offensive rebounds. Ithier-Vicenty led the team with 10 first half points on 4-of-7 from the floor.
New Haven kept the score close for most of the second half as well. Alysia Saunders helped cut the Tigers' lead to three with a layup at the 13:41 mark, while Lindsay Salt hit a three-pointer with 5:34 left to bring the Chargers within four, 40-36. Holy Family then went on an 8-2 run to take its first 10-point lead of the game. The Tigers connected from the free throw line in the final two minutes and sealed their first victory of the season.
UNH had another 10 second-half turnovers, while shooting 19.4 percent from the field.
Itheir-Vicenty led the Chargers with 13 points, while Stellmacher added 12. Saunders grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds.
