(11-07-09) COLCHESTER, Vt. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team claimed their second-straight Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season Championship with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-17) victory at St. Michael's College Saturday afternoon. With the win the Chargers finish their second straight undefeated NE-10 season with a 15-0 record and a 24-4 overall record.
After an overnight trip from Manchester, N.H. to Colchester, Vt., the Chargers slipped up in the opening set Saturday afternoon at St. Michael's. After holding it close, 9-9 through the opening half of the set, UNH gradually fell behind as the set went on. UNH was down 19-14 and eventually suffered the 25-19 loss.
The Chargers quickly took control of the second set, after being tied at 4-4 with the Purple Knights. UNH 7-2 scoring run and took an 11-6 lead. The Purple Knights fought back and cut the UNH lead to two points at 12-10, but the Charger prevailed with 13 of the final 17 points for the 25-14 victory.
The two teams played to a 6-6 tie in the third set, followed 6-0 UNH run. The Chargers then maintained that comfortable lead for the remainder of the set before scoring four of the final five points and taking a 25-15 decision.
New Haven once again took an early lead in the third set. A kill by Heather Ladao gave the Chargers a 9-5 lead, while a Keidy Candelaria kill gave UNH a 15-8 lead later in the set. The Chargers put together an 8-0 run later in the set, behind the serving of Candelaria, to take a 22-11 lead. The Purple Knights cut into the Chargers' lead, but UNH capped their 29th straight NE-10 victory with a 25-17 set-victory.
Junior Sara Malmlov led the Chargers with 14 kills and four errors on 24 total attempts (.417 hitting percentage). Candelaria added 10 kills, 14 digs and five aces for the Chargers. Tia Inong handed out 39 assists. Ladao led the team with 16 digs.
UNH will return to action on Friday, November 13 when they travel to the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament at UMass Lowell. The Chargers will know who they face in the quarterfinal match after the conclusion of NE-10 women's volleyball competition tomorrow afternoon.
