(12-20-09) BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated Lynn University (Fla.) 72-67 Sunday afternoon in Florida. The Chargers improve to 7-2 overall, while Lynn falls to 7-2.
The Chargers opened Sunday's game by taking a 22-4 lead in the opening 10:30. Lynn bounced back and cut the UNH lead to 10 points, 27-17, at the 4:55 mark of the first half. UNH junior guard Nicole Pollard hit her third three-pointer of the first half with 26 seconds left giving the Chargers their largest lead of the first half, 42-21.
The Fighting Knights would start cutting away at the Chargers lead throughout the second half. Lynn cut the New Haven lead to single digits after hitting a three-pointer with 8:48 remaining. The Fighting Knights got as close as two points, 66-64, with one minute remaining. Pollard and freshman Jill Baranger each hit a pair of free throws in the final minute which helped the Chargers hold on to the non-conference victory.
Baranger finished with a game-high 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double. The freshman connected on 6-of-10 shots and 6-of-7 free throws. Pollard finished with 17 points, while Yasmin Itheir-Vicenty added 12 points and Dominique Stellmacher scored 10 points.
The Chargers hit 38.1 percent of their shots Sunday afternoon, while the Fighting Knights hit 38.2 percent from the field. New Haven held a larger advantage in free throw shooting percentage, 76.9-35.7 percent. The Chargers went 20-for-26 from the line, compared to 5-for-14 by Lynn.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, December 22 against Nova Southeastern University. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. in Florida.
