(12-22-09) FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 58-61 Tuesday afternoon to Nova Southeastern University in Florida. With the loss the Chargers fall to 7-3 on the season, while Sharks improve to 6-5.
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead in Fort Lauderdale, thanks in part to a 45.5 percent first-half shooting percentage. After taking a 10-5 lead, UNH went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-point lead, 15-5, at the 13:57 mark. Nicole Pollard put in a layup off a fast break at the 7:41 mark to give the Chargers their largest lead of the first half, 14 points, 23-9. New Haven held on to its lead for the remainder of the first half, but the Sharks cut the UNH lead to eight at the break, 31-23.
Nova Southeastern continued to carry its momentum into the second half and went on an 8-0 run during the first 3:11 of the half to tie the game at 31-31.The Charger maintained the lead for the next three minutes, but the Sharks eventually gained the lead with 13:23 left in the second half. At the end of the 11-0 NSU run, the Sharks led by eight points, 44-36.
UNH rebounded, coming within one point after Lindsay Salt scored a pair of free throws with 2:31 left in the half. The teams then started to exchange free throws until one second remained and Salt brought the Chargers within three points. The Sharks then turned the ball over when in bounding on their next possession, leaving UNH with 0.3 seconds to try and sink a three-pointer. However, the Chargers could not get a shot off before the horn blew.
Compared to the first half, UNH shot just 25.7 percent from the floor in the second half, including just 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. New Haven was out-rebounded 59-52, which includes a 29-17 deficit in offensive rebounds.
Leading the Chargers was freshman Jill Baranger who tabbed 12 points and eight rebounds. Pollard added 13 points, while Helin Marte grabbed eight rebounds, six points and six assists.
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, December 29 when they host C.W. Post at Charger Gymnasium. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
